How to make you own Travellers Notebook / Smashbook

This project was so much fun, I’d seen the idea on Pinterest where they used the same kind of folder technique for a smashbook but rather than have booklets in there they had different slots for journalling. I really liked the idea but knew I could adapt it.

After my first attempt I already have a lot of ideas about what I am going to make next and what it will be used for.. watch this space ūüėČ the process video is HERE!

Project Ingredients:

Any orders placed on my website, using the current months hostess code (which can be found to the right of this page) will receive a gift in the post from me ūüôā

I love it!! You can see the full process video HERE where I explain step by step.

Raising money for Carrie, for medical bills not funded by NHS

Edited to add new prizes:

  • The ¬£50 UglyDori voucher has now been increased to any size UglyDori with any tooling/paint/customisation.. this is a whopping prize and Trevor is happy to work with the winner to create their dream UglyDori!!
  • A stationery Bundle from Three Little Buhos
  • ¬£20 shop credit from¬†Kelizabethplans

One of my lovely ladies on my PR Team, Carrie, is.. in totally understated words “a bit poorly” her condition….. in fact why don’t I let Carrie tell it in her own words…

Carrie’s Fund is about helping to raise funds to cover the increasing medical costs my complex condition brings.

Thanks to my stretchy-gooey-fragile connective tissue I have legs that wobble, the stamina of a sloth and an ability to facepalm the floor numerous times a day. I have complete intestinal failure, am fed directly into my heart (TPN), my upper spine is collapsing which is crushing my brainstem, I am losing my sight and my immune system is breaking down ‚Äď my whole body is literally falling apart.

Sadly, there are many aspects of my condition which are not recognised or treated on the NHS or in the UK. As a result I have to fund a lot of my medical care, pay for expensive equipment and in the near future I may need to fund surgery and treatment in other countries

Carrie’s Fund is to help ease some of the burden of these extensive costs. Some of the things that the fund has paid for and will help pay towards in the future include :

  • Specialist powered wheelchair
  • Upright MRI scans in London for spinal instability (CCI)
  • Consultations with CCI neurosurgeon in Spain
  • Travel fridge to store TPN to allow travel away from home for appointments and short breaks.”

As you can see this beautiful lady has so much to deal with and still takes time out of her day to help others and raise awareness of the condition. You can read more of Carrie’s story HERE¬†and follow her blog HERE

and the point of this post is: I decided to see if I could raise funds for Carrie’s medical treatment by donating a custom UglyDori to be raffled off, I posted in a UK sellers group on Facebook and the mega generous sellers jumped in with their own contributions to create one mega prize. Tickets are ¬£2.50 and can be paid by PayPal¬†at http://www.paypal.me/michellemills please only put the word Carrie in the notes and I will email you your ticket number (this will go to your PayPal email so please check that).

Competition closes on the 3rd April at 9am and the winner will be drawn live at 2pm that very same day. All money will be transferred to Carrie’s fundraising¬†page that day (so please pay by friends and family to maximise the¬†amount raised.

The prize…

There are more amazing contributors to come so keep checking back. If you are a seller or have an item you would like to donate to help this cause then please do contact me and I will make sure to add you to the list.

Shop Announcement : Return of the UglyDori

As of 9am this morning Ugly Bug Plans is reopen and we have listed new stock in the way of planner stickers and charms. One thing that has not yet made it back into the shop is our handmade, leather travellers notebooks. This is due to the fact that we had such a high demand for them that we are still completing orders. We plan on having them back up in the shop in the next few days.

Whilst we have been closed we have been working on new designs, the old design: the Juicy, has been modified and renamed and we now have 4 different styles (all with different price points) and that is what I am hoping to explain with this post.

The 4 new product lines are called; Lady, Hopper, Mantis and Pider. They are all available in the following colours:

Fields (Forest Green), Hot Chocolate (Dark Brown), Mr J (Purple), Sunshine (Yellow), Clown Fish (Maroon), Ocean (Turquoise), Night Sky (Navy Blue), Bare Essentials (Undyed), Skyscraper (Grey), Autumn Fall (Tan), First Kiss (Violet), 8 Ball (Black).

How have the products changed?

All of our leather products are still completely hand made, we cut, dye, stitch and finish every single product. We use 2-2.4mm leather for our back plates and 1.2-1.6mm leather for the pockets, we only use Full Grain leather which ages and patinas beautifully and carries the scars of the animal which means no 2 planners will ever be exactly the same. Hand stitching our products makes them stronger and more durable meaning they are built to last and can withstand even the heaviest use.

We love to see a stuffed notebook so all of our products are wider than standard and can fit extra books with extra elastic.

The following notebooks are all available in Pocket, A6, Personal, Regular and A5 sizes.

LADY : This is the most basic of our TNs and is simply the cover (2-2.4mm leather) with an elastic closure and 4 elastics inside.  Can come with or without pen loop.

Hopper :¬†This is the same as the LADY but has a 1.5″ reenforced spine stitched on the inside and a full size sectorial pocket on the (inside) front and back cover.

Mantis : As above and also has a vertical pocket on both front and back covers (inside)

Pider : The Pider is the closest to the older style UglyDori except all sizes now come with just 1 large  pocket and 2 half pockets on both front and back covers.

Every planner is custom built so, as long as you message within 24 hours of your order, things can be changed to suit you perfectly.

Plan My Week : #1 – My 2017 Planner Set Up

It feels good to be back, we had the loveliest Christmas and New year and it has been amazing being able to take the time off to spend together, Trevor has worked in security for the past 4 years so has always worked over Christmas and New Year, it’s been lovely having him home and not having to worry all night about his safety!!

Because we had been away the week before Christmas I hadn’t really had time to set up my 2017 planners (yes I have more than 1) so yesterday I took a couple of hours out to get organised.

I currently have these 6 planners which I will be using regularly (L-R Top; Recollections planner, A5 Carpe Diem, A5 DO1P Paperchase… Bottom; A5 UglyDori, Regular UglyDori, A6 UglyDori) the recollections planner is what I intend to use for memory keeping so you probably won’t see much of that one.

img_9592

The A5 Carpe Diem is more of a storage folder, I made 12 dividers with some scrapbook paper I had lying around, I added some small top tabs (available in my Etsy shop) so that I can access the months easily. When any appointments come through or letters from the school etc I paperclip them to the month they are relevant to and then write the appointment in my Paperchase diary. It means I never lose any paperwork and have all the information to hand when it is needed.

I decided I need a desk diary this year to keep track of my lists and to do’s and to help me plan my day to be most productive. This Paperchase diary is a DO1P (Day On 1 Page) will sit on my desk and be more of a notebook, in fact last year I used a notebook in the same manner but I missed it being dated so that I could add things in for later in the week. I’ll not decorate this at all so again you will probably see very little of her (unless i develop my Bullet Journal technique).

img_9595

Last but certainly not least are my UglyDoris, the Harry Potter one (regular) will still be used for my blog, productivity and goal setting. The A5 (middle in picture) currently has some lined pads in it for journalling and notes/brain dumping. The A6 (right in picture) is what i’ll use as my every day carry, it has a monthly diary that I can refer to when i’m out and making appointments/plans, she also has a weekly overview and a couple of notepads for ideas whilst I am out.

Currently I am happy with this set up, it looks a bit more complicated than it is but it is, in essence, the same as I was using for the last couple of months in 2016 and that seemed to work really well for me. To watch the corresponding video please click HERE!

I am currently working on my blog and YouTube posting schedule as I have a few new series that I will be introducing, I will put all this up in a separate post this week.

Competition : UglyDori Winner

Looks like I made a bit of a boo boo…. I totally missed the date to draw the winner of the competition and ended up drawing it late.

I really wanted to draw it live on Facebook but the website I use shows the email address of the winner so I had to switch the camera angle… I think for next weeks competition I’ll use a different website lol.
So the winner of the custom UglyDori and accessories was drawn on my Facebook page last night. I have emailed  the winner and she has 48 hours from yesterday to claim the prize before it is redrawn.

Don’t forget to come back on Tuesday and try your luck again.

Plan My Week

I was so excited to set my week up that I actually pencilled this spread in on Thursday. I’m totally in love with bullet journaling and have discovered a few # on Instagram that are full of bullet journal goodness.

I’m still not feeling the need to use stickers but a bit of washi tape did make an appearance this week and I used my planner stencil a whole lot on this layout!

My favourite thing about it is the simplicity, as long as I follow the “key” I should remember everything and get tasks done.

The “count your macros” quote is a reminder to myself to stay on track with a healthy diet As I’m back training this week and am hoping to lose 2lb a week before Christmas.

I’ve added a a slew tracker this week, to track the babies sleep, I’m hoping to get her back into a routine over the next 6 months.

My UglyDori was getting a tad chunky for my autum dashboard, so I moved her into the back 4 books and added this plastic card wallet/zip pouch. It has card slots (which I’ve filled with washi for now as I can’t find my debit card) and a big pouch on one size and a zipped wallet in the back.

Plan My Week : 31/10/2016-06/11/2016

Where on earth did November come from? I’m actually quite sure that it was just a week or so ago that the kids went back from the holidays and now they are just about to start back for Autumn half term… Life goes crazy quick when you have children!

You have probably guessed what is about to come, in fact if you are still here reading this then maybe you are here because you like the direction my layouts have been taking?

After changing up my layout last week, to the “bullet journal” type layout I found my planning to be productive and efficient, things got ticked off from the list and I actually ended the week feeling accomplished (that’s saying something in half term week).

Ok, things happened that were genuinely out of my control and I couldn’t tick some things off the list but I’m ok with that, I found a solution and moved on! I even managed to make a start on somethings I had planned for this week coming!

Feeling inspired I headed to Pinterest and “borrowed” some ideas to come up with a layout that “made my heart happy”…. Not the prettiest, not a sticker in sight and not a single f given!! I.LOVE.IT!!!

The key at the bottom is one I’m going to carry through now and the green/red colour coding is for money in vs out which I mark with a dot over in the day box.

I love that it’s easy to read and I have everything to hand but I think I might go for a typical “bullet journal” layout next week rather than the boxes.

To view the corresponding video click HERE!

If you have any bullet journal blogs or YouTube channels then leave them in the comments and I will be sure to check them out.
P.s I got right to the end before mentioning my UglyDori, did you think I’d forgot?

My Week : Changing it up

Ok so I know I already posted a “Plan My Week” at the beginning of this week, and I know that usually once you have planned or the week ahead you normally don’t need to complete the same week again until the following week, for some reason the week just wasn’t working for me!

Planning is, for me, a way to keep my home/work/study/blog organised, to see what is coming up and any tasks I need to complete. It keeps me functioning and, when used properly, I run more efficiently.

I know that for lots of people the use of stickers and decoration play a massive part in the planner journey and I love to look at all the pretty spreads, for me though I find a highly sticker page clogs my brain and makes me feel “busy” even on one of my less active weeks.

I tried using functional stickers this week to highlight important tasks but every time I opened the page, something I have made a habit as soon as I sit with my first cup of coffee in the morning, I quickly felt overwhelmed and found I became reluctant to look at it again.

On Tuesday I decided that I didn’t have to live out this week in my Travellers Time insert if it wasn’t working for me, no one is forcing me to stick to a layout that isn’t working for me and apart from a few stickers and one sheet of paper I had nothing to lose.

I flipped the page and drew out my alternate layout, it’s slightly BUJO style with a week on one page (WO1P) and the right hand page being for To Do’s and To Buys.

Finally I have a system that is working out for me again, yes it’s rough and not pretty but it’s doing what I need it to do, the page is uncluttered and tells me exactly what I need to know. I can see everything I need to accomplice this week and can prioritise from the list every day.

This is my “Key” system at the minute which I found on a YouTube video, alas I cannot now remember who’s. I have some simple colour coding this week but next week it’s something I am going to try to fully implement from next week.

One of my goals for the next 6 months is to improve my handwriting and as this is a whole page of just my writing I really am going to crack on with practicing.

I suppose the moral of this story is that something that works for one person won’t necessarily work for you, take ideas from lots of places, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube to name a few, and adapt them in ways that work for you… I’m off to Pinterest for bullet journal ideas for next week.

Plan My Week : UglyDori : BUJO Inserts

To say that I am loving life in my Ugly Dori would be an actual understatment! I love how everything is in one place and I literally have my whole life to hand.. I’ve even put my debit cards in the back as I carry her more than my purse.

UglyDori – Regular

This week I have made a laminated dashboard and some bookmarks so that I can flip straight to today’s page without losing paperclips from the top as I go.

I’m currently in a black (8 Ball) with hot pink stitching and elastics. She is super hot ūüôā

I’ve gone back to drawing my inserts, I love being able to change my spread weekly so that it is really tailored to my needs.

I even managed a bit of decorating this week, using the Thumbelina Prints sticker kit that we received in our UKPA goodie bags.
